Can you tell us a little bit about your daily beauty routine?
Keaton: I wash my face and I put on my sunscreen, L'Oréal Paris’ Silky Sheer BB Face Lotion SPF 50+ ($11), without a moisturizer because I figure it is a moisturizer. And then I put a little base on and hit the streets.
So you wear sunscreen every day?
Keaton: It’s what I put on first in the morning. Unfortunately when I was young, sunblock just wasn’t out there. There there was nothing. If you wanted to be in the sun, you wore a hat or something. But that’s not why I like hats. I was oblivious for years. Even into my 40’s, I wanted to sit in the sun and I wanted get colour, but I paid the price big time. I really took many skin cancers. I thought I could zap them off, but then finally I got a big squamous cell carcinoma and that was the scary one. We biopsied it, but they couldn’t find the cancer. So we never thought it was cancer until the third try when they finally found it. That’s the thing. When you’re dealing with cancer, you just never know for sure. And it’s a little bit worse than you think sometimes—even with squamous cell, which doesn’t usually kill people, but it has. And with basal cell, it can mess up your face permanently for the rest of your life. You never think they are cancer.
Do you have any can’t-live-without beauty products?
Keaton: Eyeliner is a friend. Lipstick is a friend. All lipsticks are life-changing. I cannot stress that enough. I even have them in my pockets! Also, can’t live without a pocket.
Have you picked up any great makeup tricks during your career?
Keaton: I think every face is different, so every face should have its own special tricks. Everyone has to figure their head out—it’s all you can do. I like a lot of eye makeup, obviously. I like to just go with these eyes that slant down. I wish that I could get away with red lipstick, but the dark is not good for me.
