8 Beauty Rituals You Need to Adopt ASAP
I have an intimate relationship with beauty—that’s something we (you + me) have in common. It’s something that not everyone understands (believe me, I’ve done my fair share of defending myself), but when you cherish the time spent with products and treatments like I do, you just get it. Luckily, I get to do this for a living. Yes, that means reviewing new skincare offerings, applying innovative hair products, and even experimenting with Jennifer Lawrence’s favourite facial.
As such, I feel adequately well-versed in helpful additions to your beauty routine. And it doesn’t have to be expensive or based on the routine of Hollywood’s latest darling.

This is one you’ve probably heard, but that doesn’t make it any less effective. Drinking water is the easiest habit to incorporate into your mornings, and it works naturally to give off a lit-from-within glow. Jennifer Aniston swears by it. The actress told People, “I drink water endlessly. Like five [bottles] a day. Now it’s just such habit.” The thought of looking half as good in my 20s as she looks in her late 40s is motivation enough. Just grab a glass or two of water before your morning coffee and it will make a world of difference.
There’s nothing more luxurious than leisurely getting ready—for the day, a date, even an afternoon on the couch (no judgment). We spend our lives rushing around from place to place, and it’s rare to have time to ourselves. Turn your bathroom into a sanctuary, and take as much time as you need to calm your mind and pamper your skin. I’ve spent years editing down my makeup and hair routine to get out the door in 10 minutes or less. Now I’m trying to slow things down. (You have to try La Prairie’s Skin Caviar Luxe Sleep Mask). It does wonders for staying blissed out, focused, and far less stressed in my daily life.
A quick stretch will instantly turn your mood around. It immediately makes you feel like you’ve done something, if only for just five minutes. In the moment, it increases blood flow, wakes you up, and gives you more energy to take on the day—whatever you may be doing. Long term, stretching will improve your posture, alleviate all those aches and pains, and strengthen your muscles.
Masks have practically exploded on the beauty scene over the last few years—each iteration easier to apply and better for your skin than the last. You can mask while you drink your morning coffee, before your brush your teeth at night, or even during the day for a 20-minute pick-me-up. My most recent go-to is Estée Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair Concentrated Recovery PowerFoil Mask ($120), as it’s super concentrated and really great for Snapchat selfies.
I learned about this one while pretending to be a model backstage at NYFW, and it’s especially great when you’re looking to hide a hangover from your co-workers. Start by massaging your skin in circular motions upward from the base of your neck toward your jaw. Then use circular motions along the sides of your face and around your eyes. It really melts those great ingredients from your moisturiser into your skin and wakes up your whole face. It takes only 30 seconds, but you’ll feel like a whole new person afterward—and you’ll look better too.
This is an anti-ageing, aromatherapeutic way to rid yourself of afternoon tension. Apply a mix of your favourites to your fingertips (mine is lavender and eucalyptus oils), and massage the pressure point along your temples for a minute or two. Breathe it all in and feel your stress melt away. You’ll instantly notice a difference… and so will your co-workers.
Waking up in the morning before a day at the office can, for lack of a better word, suck. But I find if I plan out a cool beauty look the night before, I’m excited to get out of bed the next morning. It could be a new lipstick, a different hairstyle… even applying a new moisturiser works. Plus, once you get to work, you’re sure to receive at least one compliment. This new launch from Glossier is what got me up on Monday.
Much like planning to use a new product the night before, this ritual is meant to get you excited about a new day. I’m guilty of reverting to my fallbacks—the same natural makeup look, dry shampoo–spritzed hair, and my favourite fancy lip balm. But trying something different can totally turn your week around. Wear your naturally curly hair air-dried for a change, or add a little sparkle to your usually matte face. The difference is subtle, but it’ll certainly be palpable.
