Hi, Byrdie readers! Chriselle Lim here from The Chriselle Factor, and today I wanted to share with you my daily nighttime beauty routine.
I can easily confess that skincare is something I do not take lightly. In fact, it’s something I take very seriously! I was always fascinated by how my mother would sit in front of her vanity every night, slathering on products before going to bed—and now I can proudly say that I have become her! Before I jump into my intensive nighttime skincare regimen, let me share a few facts that might help you understand why it’s so important to take care of your skin at night.
First, they say that skin-cell renewal is faster at night. Research shows that the time between 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. is when collagen is boosted and harmful free radicals are destroyed, and that is why it is so crucial to get a good night’s rest during these hours. Trust me, this was not an easy habit for me to adopt, as I’m naturally a night owl, but I make a big effort to be in bed by 11 p.m. on a daily basis for this reason. Also, your skin temperature is naturally higher at night, which means that your skin is more receptive to active ingredients. With that said, it’s incredibly important to have a diligent nighttime routine to maximise your products and reap the benefits during your sleep! Step 1: Oil
I always start and end my nighttime beauty regime with an oil. I use an oil to wash off my makeup before my cleanser because it instantly melts away all the stubborn makeup and SPF I used during the day. Products like waterproof mascara and skin tints with SPF are harder to rinse off with a gentle cleanser. Also, oils are a great way to massage your face, loosen your lymph nodes, and give yourself a little face-lift (which is one of the anti-ageing techniques I wrote about here). Then I soak a washcloth in hot water and have the hot steam seep into my skin as I scrub off the makeup. There are a number of great cleansing oils, but I currently use Caudalie’s Makeup Remover Cleansing Oil ($32).
Step 2: Cleanser
Next, I gently rub my cleanser in an circular motion on top of my skin. This is what you call double-cleansing. Yes, it is a lot of work, but trust me, it’s incredibly effective, and I’ve seen amazing results since I’ve been doing it. Washing your face with a cleanser after using an oil will ensure you’ve gotten rid of all the buildup from your day. I’ve been using Bare Minerals Clay Chameleon Transforming Purifying Cleanser. Step 3: Cleansing Water With Cotton Pad
This may sound extremely excessive, but I end my cleansing process with cleansing water. I saturate a cotton pad with the product and gently sweep it all over my face to remove any leftover impurities; this is also a great way to tone and brighten the skin. I’ve been using the Dr. Jart Dermaclear Micro Water ($48) for over six months, and I’ve seen significant improvements on my skin in that time.
Step 4: Mask
Masks are my guilty pleasure. I give myself a mask of some sort almost every single night. I alternate between different types of masks, depending on the current state of my skin. If my skin is feeling a bit congested, I will give myself a detoxifying clay mask (the Bobbi Brown Instant Detox Mask, $65, does wonders for my skin). If my skin is looking a bit dull, I will use a brightening and hydrating mask, like the Black Rose Cream Mask ($180) from Sisley. Korean sheet masks are also great for instant hydration to the skin.
Step 5: Toner
Most toners are composed of active ingredients that are great for the skin to absorb in the evening. Toners add an extra barrier of moisture to your skin—they’re incredibly hydrating and calming. I’ve been using the SK II Facial Treatment Essence ($99), which I mention in my post on flawless skin.
Step 6: Serum
Serum is one of my favourite steps. As with toner, there are many active ingredients in a serum, and so many serums on the market; you just have to find one that fits your skin type. So, beside the fact that I’m finally in my 30s and more aware of fine lines and wrinkles, I also I have slightly oily skin with a history of acne. I recently discovered iS Clinical Active Serum, and it’s one of the most effective products I’ve used to date. It’s a fast-acting and results-oriented formula that not only helps decrease the appearance of fine lines but also diminishes acne and reduces pore size. My favourite part? The tingling sensation you immediately feel after applying it.
Step 7: Moisturiser
Do I need to go into the importance of moisturising? Finding a moisturiser that will really penetrate and add moisture to the skin is crucial. I’ve been using Darphin’s Exquisage Beauty Revealing Cream ($133). With this product, I always wake up to the most plump and glowing skin. The more you keep your skin hydrated and moisturised, the younger and more vibrant you look. Speaking of moisturised skin, here are five tips to get that dewy Korean glow.
Step 8: Eye Cream
Dark under-eye circles have always been a trouble spot for me, so I never skip eye creams. I’ve been using Neocutis’s Lumiere Bio Restorative Eye Cream With PSP. This cream has increased firmness around my eyes, and the hyaluronic acid plumps and hydrates the under-eye area.
Step 9: Face Oil
I always end my nighttime regimen with a rose face oil. It’s a great way to lock in all that moisture, and it also adds in some aromatherapy, allowing my senses to relax and get ready for bed. I’m obsessed with Sisley’s Black Rose Precious Face Oil ($260); it has a high concentration of active ingredients. It leaves my skin incredibly silky in the evening, and I wake up to illuminated, dewy skin the next morning.
And that’s it for my daily bedtime beauty routine. Although these steps may seem excessive, after repeating it for a few weeks, you’ll see a major difference in your skin’s texture and overall look.
