My Love Story: Charlotte Tilbury Magic Foundation

Hallie Gould

Beauty editors aren’t exactly known to be brand loyal. In fact, very few can name more than one product they’ve been in a monogamous relationship with for more than a few months. It’s not that we’re fickle by nature. It’s just that by the time we hit the bottom of our must-have jar of night cream, there’s a new one we’re bound to fall in love with waiting for us. (Life’s rough, we know.) We’re telling you all this only to highlight the importance of the products that do make it into our regular rotation—the ones that don’t get replaced by the latest and greatest, but our one true (beauty) loves. This February, we’re sharing all of our product love stories. Enjoy!

I’ve had a few great loves in my life—and yes, most of them have been beauty products. Dating is great, but there’s something about an intoxicating signature scent or a killer red lip that consistently keeps me swooning. Some relationships can be fleeting (the fear of commitment and whatnot), but there are also offerings that I hold dear to my heart. Shout out to Nars’ Velvet Matte Lip Pencil ($41) in Mysterious Red, my lifelong partner in crime. In this case, though, my most recent love story is still in the early stages—the honeymoon phase, so to speak. We’re passed courting, we’ve declared exclusivity, but I’m still feeling lusty each time we embrace. I’m talking about Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Foundation ($65). Recently released in the States (and Australia!), this formula is unlike anything I’ve ever applied to my face.

The velvety formula is full coverage yet feels completely weightless. It’s also chock-full of every bit as many anti-ageing and protective benefits as your favourite moisturiser. It’s un-be-lievable. Charlotte Tilbury worked for five years to create this product—she listened to the skin concerns of women (discolouration, redness, cystic acne, dullness, texture, et al.) and truly formulated a product that covers anything. It primes, colour-corrects, and conceals, too.

Though Tilbury created a custom brush to apply the formula, I’ve been using a damp Beautyblender with great results. I put one to two pumps on the back of my hand to warm the product. Then, I just tap on and roll to blend. This foundation flawlessly melts into the skin for coverage that looks natural but airbrushed at the same time. I’ve never received more compliments on my skin in my life. Plus, it holds concealer in place to boot. Usually, my concealer creases and slides around throughout my night (I have to touch up more that I’d like to). But with Magic Foundation, no longer.

Just in case you don’t want to take my word for it, here are the facts: 89% of women agree it lasts all day, and 77% per cent say it gives them perfect-looking skin. A whopping 90% of women tested maintain that it feels comfortable on their faces, never heavy or cakey. The ingredients include Laricyl, a mushroom extract that moisturises and firms; spheres of hyaluronic acid that actively plump and hydrate the skin; and supercharged vitamin C to even skintone.

You guys, this foundation is the real deal. I’ve been around the foundation block, and this one is the best of the best. I don’t have to be an astrologist to see a long, successful relationship in our future.
