7 Celebrity Makeup Artists Share Their Favourite 10-Second Tips
Any time we come across a quick makeup trick, it’s gold in our books. Especially if said trick makes a world of a difference, we employ it daily. We pick these up anywhere from our own trial and error to a friend’s suggestion to unexpected places like Reddit. But quite possibly our favourite place to learn about fast (and effective) makeup tips is celebrity makeup artists: Learning how to execute an exact trick that’s used on Hollywood’s finest makes us feel like we’re (pseudo) celebrities ourselves.
So in our quest to grow our knowledge base of these celeb tips, we asked some of the best in the industry how to amp up our makeup in 10 seconds or less. What they came back with were must-know ways to brighten your eyes, plump your lips, and so much more. Ahead, their responses, along with the products you’ll need to (quickly) give your beauty routine a tune-up.
Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner ($38)
“One of my favourite ways to quickly make lashes look thicker and define the eyes is to line the inside upper lid of the eye at the lash line. The trick is to use a gel liner (two great ones: MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack, $32, or Bobbi Brown Gel Liner). Gel liners dry quickly and stay put so you can put it anywhere you want it. Begin by dipping your brush in the gel liner pot, and blot against the back of your hand. This will knock off any excess liner and dry it down a touch. Then place your finger just under the centre of your eyebrow and gently lift your lid. Apply the liner to the inside rim. Whether you are just wearing mascara or going for a smoky eye, this trick really works.” — Vanessa Scali
Murine Clear Eyes Eye Drops ($8)
“Use eye drops that reduce redness. Not only do they make the eyeball clean and white, but they also reduce the redness from the rim of your lid. The uniform colour makes the eyes look larger, brighter, and more awake. Use a white liner (we like Nars' Larger Than Life Long-Wear Eyeliner, $36, in Santa Monica Blvd) on the lower inside rim of the eye. It may appear too white at first, but give it five minutes and it’s amazing.” — Scali
L'Oréal Infallible Long Wear Lip Gloss in Girl On Top ($22)
“For a quick makeup trick, try using one product for multiple uses. I love to do this with the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Matte Glosses. Their texture and sheerness help the product to act not only as a gloss, but also a nice cream blush. Apply the gloss to lips as normal and then tap a little onto cheeks for a sheer pop of colour.” — Sir John
Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat Re-Size & Re-Shape Lip Liner in Iconic Nude ($35)
“Sometimes I use a neutral shade of lip liner to prep and prime the eyelid. It adds a little warmth under the eyeshadow. They tend to be creamy because they're made for lips, so it looks great for when I want that beautiful warm, summery eye. I’ll take the lip liner, blend it to defuse the colour on the lash line, then I’ll set it with a soft pale or sometimes shimmery eye shadow to get a glowing look.” — Vincent Oquendo
Nars Blush ($44)
“I love using a touch of blush in the crease of the eye before eye shadow. It warms up the look and makes the eye colour pop, especially if the blush is rose or pink in tone. When you pair it with neutral shadows, it gives an unexpected and unexplainable pop to the eye.” — Beau Nelson
