How to Pair Your Hair and Makeup Like a Celeb
There’s something about the way a celebrity pairs her hair and makeup that looks both effortless and intricate at the same time. Perhaps it’s the fact that they’re blessed with super-human genes (or super-human glam teams who know exactly how to make that happen). Or, most likely, a mixture of the two. Either way, when a celeb shows up on the red carpet or struts down a New York City street (we see you Gigi Hadid), we take notice. And, if you’re me, you take notes.
Keep scrolling for six celeb-approved beauty pairings that will have you feeling famous in no time.
Gigi Hadid is a Cali girl through and through, but ever since moving to NYC a few years back (yes, I watched her reality-star mother move her into her first Manhattan apartment on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills), she's been able to maintain a bi-coastal beauty routine. Her long, beachy blonde waves are quintessentially L.A., but her often daring makeup looks scream New York. Plus, we've noticed a little more bedhead than barrel curls on the model (along with that '90s mocha liquid lipstick) for a pairing that is both practical and absolutely chic.
Re-create her look with Klorane Gentle Dry Shampoo With Oat Milk ($15) and Maybelline Color Sensational Lip Liner in Nude ($9) and Color Sensational Stripped Nudes Lipstick in Coffee Craze ($18).
In typical model-off-duty style, Kendall Jenner rocks a wavy half-bun and barely there makeup better than I ever imagined possible, and often. Even now, after Jen Atkin so boldly chopped her hair into a lob, it still works. She explained the best way to get that awesome texture when I interviewed her earlier this year: "My hair is so stick straight and silky,” she explained, “so when I sleep with it wet and wake up in the morning, it has this nice texture to it. That’s my version of doing my hair." Jenner also revealed in that same interview that she's cool to go makeup-free, but always swipes on a good mascara.
Taylor is known for a matte, red lip and black cat-eye liner—a style she’s reverted back to after dipping her toe in the platinum blonde, slightly more punk-rock pool for a month or two. Here, she keeps things classic with her signature makeup and an updated twist on Old Hollywood finger curls.
Jourdan Dunn reigns supreme when it comes to that perfectly-styled, piece-y bob with ombré highlights. That, and a sultry, golden smoky eye. She told Into the Gloss: "I’m protecting my hair, but at the same time playing with what kind of style I want to do. I have so many wigs now! I have a blue wig, a purple wig, I have long, bob, medium–it’s fun!" Coined her "hair shrine," Dunn uses Phyto Subtil Elixir to protect her hair from heat. "I’ll spray that on and then straighten it," she explains, "so it doesn’t look all frizzy. It locks in the moisture."
Known for her impossibly long, perfectly curled locks, Selena Gomez's 'dos can pretty much do no wrong. Whether she's whipping it around on tour, braiding it up for a red carpet, or trimming the front pieces into '70s bangs—we're smitten. Usually, she'll play up her eyes with her hair down and go for a dark, moody lip when her hair is pulled back. Case and point: This incredible loose side-braid and berry lipstick.
The edgier of the Hadids, Bella knows how to smize and strut clad in leather and vintage denim better than most. Her downtown vibes keep her cat-eyes exaggerated (you'll need a steady hand for that one) and her hair wispy and wind-blown in the most effortless of ways.
Re-create her look with celebrity makeup artist favourite Marc Jacobs Beauty Magic Marc'er Precision Pen Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner ($44) and Ghd Classic Wave Wand ($230), which is oval rather than circular for relaxed "S" waves rather than overdone barrel curls.
