Candice Swanepoel Does This One Thing Before Applying Her Foundation
As the official sponsor of the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, Max Factor has a direct line to some of our favourite Angels. (In particular, Candice Swanepoel, who is an ambassador for the storied makeup brand.) Last year, the brand used the show as an opportunity to test-drive it's latest launch, going through 50 tubes of False Lash Epic Mascara. With an extra-black formula and special ball-tipped brush (for capturing even the littlest lashes), the mascara proved to be a hit both on the runway and with the models themselves. Soon to launch in Australia, we quizzed Candice Swanepoel on shooting the campaign, the all-natural product she uses instead of primer, and her health and fitness routine.

Byrdie Australia: So, Max Factor's False Lash Epic launch, what’s it all about?
Candice Swanepoel: It's about enhancing your eyelashes to maximum effect, and getting that beautiful fanned out look we all want. The campaign makeup was very dramatic. I wore this beautiful gold eye look, so it was all about the lashes and what this amazing mascara can do! It’s a very young, modern look.
B: Why do you think women are always striving for bigger lashes?
CS: I think it's because everyone wants their eyes to stand out more. It's a very feminine thing to have long, full lashes, so women are always aiming for that.
B: How would you describe the campaign makeup looks?
Epic, dramatic and glamourous—just as Max Factor always is! I never usually pair a bold eye with a bold lip, but it’s actually quite festive. The second look (image below) is an evolution of the first, and more dramatic. For the second look, we took the existing gold eyeshadow out to my temples and added a dark, wine-stained lip. I would usually be afraid of this combination but it looked really good. I will definitely be trying it again at home.

B: What beauty products are you using at the moment?
CS: What’s really important before you even get to makeup, is to take care of your skin. I use a lot of different masks and natural products. I like rosewater spray, which is also really great for flying. I think it’s good to keep things simple before you start your makeup.
B: How would you describe your approach to health and fitness?
CS: My approach is all about balance. Eating healthfully, knowing my body and exercising regularly. Nothing extreme—it’s about enjoying life as well.
