Why I Did My Own Wedding Makeup, by Bianca Cheah
When we think of someone who lives and breathes health and wellness (and does it all in a very chic way), there’s one name in particular that comes to mind: Bianca Cheah. The founder of Sporteluxe and Sukin ambassador is gorgeous, no doubt, but most impressively, she manages to stay balanced, juggling her fast-paced career, fitness and social life with her adorable Frenchie, Sporte, along for the ride.
For these reasons (and more) we are so excited to announce Cheah as our newest Byrdie contributor. (Just in time for the new year, and all your health resolutions!) Here, in her first column, Cheah reveals her past as a makeup artist and beauty therapist (yep, just another reason why she looks so luminous all the time), and explains why she chose to do her own makeup on her wedding day. Plus, she walks us through her go-to makeup products and how she uses them on the daily. Keep reading for Bianca Cheah's makeup secrets!
Hi Byrdie readers! I’m so excited to be joining the Byrdie family as a contributor. Not only am I excited, I’m super keen to be sharing with you all the latest in my world of health, wellbeing and beauty. Keep watching these pages!
Let's start with some of my makeup tips and tricks. (After all, I had a small stint as a makeup artist and beauty therapist so I kinda know a thing or two about beauty.) When it comes to makeup, minimal is my forte and I’ll always opt for that fresh, healthy look. It can be hard to create this without looking like you're wearing makeup, but it all comes down to neutral colours, and clever highlighting and shading.
On my wedding day I did my own makeup. I prefer the way I do it, plus, having been a makeup artist, I know the drill! I also liked the idea of my bridesmaids and I all helping each other out with hair and makeup instead of hiring someone. I wanted all the girls to look their own individual selves… Each girl looked unique and in their own way beautiful.
With this in mind, here’s step-by-step guide to creating the naturally glowy, healthy and radiant makeup look I love. Keep scrolling for the how-to!
MAC Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation ($49)
I use a long-lasting primer so my foundation stays put all day long. Next, I dust a powder foundation like MAC Studio Fix Powder Plus all over. I have combination skin so powders suit my skin type better than oilier cream foundations (which just slip off).
Paula's Choice The Nude Mattes Eyeshadow Palette ($73)
To contour, I gently dust a darker powder just below my cheekbones and at the outer edges of my nose. The MAC Bronzing Powder ($39) is what I’m loving for that at the moment. Next, I take an angled eyebrow brush and lightly fill in my brows with a greyish light brown shade. Paula’s Choice do a really beautiful neutrals palette that I use. I use the same palette to contour my eyes, sweeping a light brown shade over my lids and blending it out as I pass the crease. I’ll then apply a beige colour under my brow bone to highlight. I'll also pop Nars Blush in Orgasm ($42) on the apples of my cheeks.
Yves Saint Laurent Volume Effet Faux Cils Mascara in Black ($55)
Using liquid eyeliner I carefully line my top lids as close as I can to my lashes. I’ll then go over this with a dark grey eyeshadow to soften the line. I finish off eyes by coating my lashes with an Yves Saint Laurent volumising mascara, sweeping them out towards the outer corner of my eyes. (Doing this gives the effect of a more sultry almond-shaped eye.)
Rae Morris Flawless Shader ($80)
Next, I'll use my Make Up Store loose highlighting powder. With a very gentle dip into the powder and a good shake off (so there’s hardly any product left on the brush), I’ll sweep it over the tops of cheekbones, under my eyebrows and over my Cupid's bow. It gives a beautiful shimmer to my skin.
To finish I’ll spritz on Sukin Hydrating Mist Toner. It’s a beautiful touch as it contains chamomile to soothe the skin. I love the scent and how relaxed it makes me feel.
And there you have it! Even though it sounds like a lot of makeup, it’s very minimal and looks super fresh and summery!
