An Expert Reveals the Best Crystals for Relaxation and Restful Sleep
What would you say if I told you you could quell anxiety and cure sleeplessness using nothing but crystals? If you're making a face at your screen like have you lost the plot lady?, you look exactly like I did when my bestie suggested amethyst as a cure for my insomnia. Said bestie is a gemstone fanatic, (she wears moon-charged rose quartz in her bra at all times), so I take her advice on this alternative practice with a grain of salt. This wasn't the first time she had tried to convert me, either. I received a giant, sparkly celestite cluster for my birthday this year, smack bang in the middle of one of the most stressful periods of my life. Think it was a coincidence that this particular stone has a reputation for promoting peace, confidence and relaxation? It wasn't. As someone with a streak of skepticism (as well as an open mind), I was willing to give gemstone therapy a go despite finding the concept a little far-fetched. In the end I figured, what have I got to lose? Could it be that a simple hunk of crystal could solve a problem that valerian root, sleeping pills, meditation, deep breathing and yoga stretches had all failed to?
I'll cut to the chase—it kinda worked. I wasn't exactly prepared to see a difference in my mental health, but that's exactly what happened. Strangely adding a chunk of amethyst to my bedside table not only immediately made my bedroom feel like a calmer place, it seemed to help me drift off faster. While I can't back up my newfound belief in this particular property with scholarly research (truth be told, there isn't a lot of data to support *or* contradict the supposed healing qualities of gemstones), I can say that since adopting the practice I've found myself less anxious at night, and sleep easier to come by. I'm open to the fact that these benefits could be entirely down to the placebo effect. The bottom line: a win is a win any way you look at it.
Inspired by my magical experience with the mystical properties of amethyst, I reached out to Rachel Crethar, owner of Rock & Co, for more ideas on crystals that help to create a relaxing and restful environment. From promoting a sense of calm to helping clear a busy mind before bed, keep scrolling for more.
Rock & Co Smokey Quartz Point ($200)
Crethar names two different stones for grounding, each with a slightly different intensity—hematite and smokey quartz. The former is more stimulating, and can be used to encourage focus as well as calm. "Hematite has a magnetic energy that leaves you feeling balanced, calm and centred, and can eliminate any negative energy from within your body," says Crethar. The latter is grounding in an uplifting way, with a more subtle energy than hematite. "Smokey quartz absorbs the negative energy around it, replacing it with light; I keep mine on my beside table and hold it if I'm feeling stressed or overwhelmed," says Crethar.
Rock & Co Large Clear Quartz Cluster ($180)
"Clear Quartz is known for providing mental clarity and clearer thinking—it is considered the most versatile crystal due to its energy clearing and protection abilities, and healing influence," says Crethar. Said to be an ideal companion during times you require razor-sharp focus, like study or meditation, it's positive effects don't end there. "It is also perfect placed in a living room or the main areas of your house for clearing away any unwanted negative energies," says Crethar.
Rock & Co Celestite ($120)
Confirming everything my bestie told me about this pretty blue stone, Crethar describes it as a tool for encouraging mental clarity during times of stress. "It also promotes an overall feeling of peace and instills confidence that everything will turn out okay," she explains.
Rock & Co Citrine Cluster ($40)
Need some positivity in your life? Look no further this sunny gem. "Citrine is known as the 'stone of the sun' because of its yellow-orange colour and ability to bring warmth, energy and growth," says Crethar. Thanks to these uplifting qualities citrine can assist you in manifesting a hopeful outlook, as well as strengthening willpower and determination.
Rock & Co A-Grade Amethyst Cluster ($120)
"Amethyst is known for its metaphysical ability to still the mind and emotions—it brings soothing and calming energies that help you relax," says Crethar. In addition to these properties (and its obvious good looks) amethyst is also believed to absorb and repel negative energies, ridding your body of anxiety. Place a chunk on your bedside table to help you drift off and keep stress-induced nightmares at bay.
Another doozy for treating sleeplessness, selenite is said to cleanse and rejuvenate your aura overnight. "Selenite is known as a wonderful stone for insomnia, as it surrounds your body with protective energy while you sleep," says Crethar.
