Byrdie Editors Agree: These Are the Only Beauty Looks From the AMAs Worth Seeing
The American Music Awards are currently happening in L.A., and we're living for the jaw-dropping beauty looks on the red carpet. The AMAs are well-known as an event where celebs can get a little dramatic. At this point, fun hair and makeup moments are par for the course. (Remember Kendall Jenner's faux fringe and Gigi Hadid's pretend chop?) This year too, does not disappoint, with Nina Dobrev sporting metallic braids and Bella Thorne repping acid green-dipped strands. Of course, there are stunningly understated looks too, with Selena Gomez (!!) and Ciara leading the charge in that department. Keen to see the only AMAs beauty looks Byrdie editors deem worth seeing?

Lisa Patulny: "The AMAs marks Selena's first event back in the spotlight, and I know I'm not the only one happy about that. Her simple centre-parted pony and nude-on-nude makeup reminds me just how elegant she can look."
Amanda Stavropoulos: "Selena (who came dressed as the dancing-girl emoji) has the easiest hair to recreate on the red carpet. Parted in the middle, and pulled into a low-pony, this is a style I can actually recreate myself. Plus, it's perfect for showing off dangly earrings."
Amanda Stavropoulos: "Ciara’s wispy fringe is the stuff hair dreams are made of. Her nude lip and smoky eye is understated, and perfectly complements her full gown."
Lisa Patulny: "There's something about a purposely undone 'do and gown combo that always feels like magic. Ciara's windswept pony gives her whole ensemble a "didn't try" vibe, which I love. (And am forever trying to replicate.) Her nude lip is a thousand shade of perfection, too. The colour looks a lot like Tom Ford's Lip Color ($78) in Sable Smoke."
Lauren Powell: "Nina's beauty look is classic-meets-cool. I love that her beautiful blowdry has been given a little edge—perfect for the AMA’s—with two silver-painted boxer braids. Her dewy skin and smoky eye is #makeupgoals."
Lisa Patulny: "A classic charcoal smoky eye will never date, but I love that Nina's makeup artist used metallic green shadow—it's just as sultry but makes her eye colour pop. The metallic braids add a little fun and flavour."
Lauren Powell: "This look isn’t really my style, but I think Bella pulls it off. Her makeup is beautiful—as is her face! The glittery, green-dipped hair is a little too crazy for me, but the red shade up top is gorgeous."
Lisa Patulny: "Okay, so I'm not a huge fan of the green-dipped hair, but overall I'm seriously into this look. Bella's red-toned makeup is so flattering it's got me reconsidering my stance on rust eyeshadow worn with red lips. Love the septum ring, too."
Lisa Patulny: "The whole no-makeup-makeup-on-steroids vibe is simple but gorgeous, and lets Tinashe's curls take focus. I've screenshot this look for later—her artfully dishevelled updo and ear party combo is my ultimate summer beauty goals."
Alison Rice: "Proof that a glam lash works better without a lip, and baby hair is always on trend."
Lisa Patulny: "Can you deal with the perfection that is Gigi Hadid?! She looks amazing from top to toe, but I NEED the lipstick she's wearing. The punchy coral-red hue is yet to be revealed, but I predict a stampede the second Maybelline confirms the shade."
Amanda Stavropoulos: "I’m no hair pro, but Gigi’s slicked-back hair feels easy enough to DIY. I’ll be taking her lead and combing my hair back after a day on the beach. Also, her bronze smoky eye is heaven."
Alison Rice: "Gigi's done that trick I keep forgetting to do—highlighter on the Cupid's Bow makes a red lip so much more outstanding."
