You Asked, We Answered: A Byrdie Facebook Q&A
We Byrdie editors seriously wish we could be friends with each and every one of our readers. That sounds like hyperbole, but it's not. Every time one of you sends us a witty Snapchat or thoughtful comment on a story, we remember exactly why we do what we do.
We wanted to connect with you all a little more. So, last week we asked you to head to our Instagram and leave us your most burning beauty questions. You sent us some truly insightful inquiries, from how to prevent razor burn to how to find a great sunscreen for oily skin. Then, we grabbed our L.A. edit team and filmed ourselves answering as many of your Qs as we could, live on Facebook.
ICYMI, here are a handful of those answers. If you want to watch the whole Facebook live Q&A, scroll to the end of this post!
"I love my Tatcha sunscreen. I know it’s expensive but totally worth it in my opinion. I tell everyone that I’ve had the same tube for about a year now so it really lasts a really long time. The finish is beautiful, it almost feels like a makeup primer. You get this velvety matte finish. I highly recommend it." — Faith Xue, editorial director
Exuviance Sheer Daily Protector SPF 50 ($46)
"Right now my favourite is by Exuviance. It’s really thin and lightweight, which I like. I definitely don’t like [sunscreen] when it’s super chalky. It’s also slightly tinted so you get a little bit of coverage." — Amanda Montell, associate features editor
Tarte Tartelette 2 In Bloom Amazonian Clay Palette ($75)
"I love this question because I struggled with this for so long, especially because I have woefully teary eyes, and I just feel like it gets smudged all year round—not just the summer. I found what really worked for me was... I started putting a little bit of [neutral] eyeshadow under my eyes. The powder kind of keeps everything from getting smudged, but also it looks great makeup-wise." — Victoria Hoff, associate editor
Rimmel London ScandalEyes Waterproof Kohl Eyeliner ($10)
"I think at the end of the day, it depends on the eyeliner you’re using. I hoard black eyeliners. I always have five in my purse. I’ve tested a bunch and you just have to find a good formula usually like a gel pencil that you can do on your waterline that won’t smudge. Right now I’m really liking Rimmel ScandalEyes. ... It stays in place, and I have very oily eyelids." — FX
Clinique Bottom Lash Mascara ($28)
"I find that [my makeup] smudges and runs when I’ve just put way too much on my face. If I’ve put on too much bottom mascara, it’ll eventually flake and smudge everywhere. I find that a good tip for preventing that is getting one of those skinny bottom lash mascaras ... [one] that can really get every one of your bottom lashes [without] overloading your face with too much clumpy mascara." —AM
RMS Beauty Un Cover-Up ($55)
"I think it all comes down to finding a good formula. I love RMS Beauty’s "Un" Cover-Up. It’s super creamy and gives really great coverage, but melts into your skin. Since it’s all-natural it kind of feels like a moisturiser. It does crease slightly under my eyes but it’s nothing a few dabs of your finger doesn’t fix. It’s all about finding a really creamy, non-drying formula." —VH
Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat Neutral Correct ($63)
"Definitely your concealer is going to crease and look cakey if you’re using too much. I talked to a makeup artist the other week who was saying that a big mistake that even makeup artists make is layering on way too much concealer to hide dark circles and puffiness when what you probably need is more of a colour corrector. If you have dark circles or something like that, you can get away with using getting less product while still getting the coverage you want. YSL makes great colour correctors as does Urban Decay." —AM
Redken Cleansing Cream ($32)
"Moving to LA has been a wonderful thing for my hair because it’s so dry here, and my hair is so thick and frizz-prone. But one thing that has worked for me is kind of stopping frizz at the source by using a great shampoo and conditioner. I don’t use shampoo anymore because it dries out my hair, which leads to frizz. Frizz is caused by dry hair that’s been exposed to moisture. So I use a cleansing cream, which has been wonderful. ..." — VH
Reverie Milk Anti-Frizz Leave-In Nourishing Treatment ($57)
"My hair get’s really poofy if I just let it air-dry. Nobody believes me but it’s true. What I usually do, like Victoria, is use a really gentle shampoo and conditioner, and right after I get out of the shower, I put in a leave-in conditioner. I really like Reverie Milk (you can use it on wet or dry hair). I put it in and I let my hair air-dry about 75%, until right when it starts getting big. Then I put it in a low braid at the back of my neck and use a hair tie really loosely. By the time I drive to the office, which is about 40 minutes, before I walk through the door, I take it out and I’m like, tada!" — FX
Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution in Sexy Sienna ($48)
"Flattering? I don’t think about what’s flattering; I think about what’s fun! But you know, in the summer, I really like a bright pinky coral. Charlotte Tilbury has a shade called Sexy Sienna, which I’m really liking right now. ... It’s super pretty, and it’s got a little bit of an electric coral pop in it, which I really like." — AM
Ilia Lipstick in Voila ($38)
"I usually like to stick with a natural lip in the summer/year round. But one colour that I’ve been loving and that works well with my skin tone is tangerine. The trick, which is kind of tough, is to choose like a blue-based orange to keep your teeth from looking yellow." — VH
Lipstick Queen Hello Sailor Lip Gloss ($39)
"There’s also Lipstick Queen’s Hello Sailor and Frog Prince lipsticks and lip glosses, which are these crazy amazing things. We did an unboxing video where Faith checked out [the Hello Sailor lip gloss]. It comes out of the packaging blue and you think How on earth is this going to look good on my skin? But it develops into a really pretty pink." — AM
