The One Thing a Thyroid Expert Eats for Breakfast Every Day
The concept of eating an "anti-inflammatory" diet is finally making its way into the mainstream. Nutritionists agree that inflammation-causing foods are some of the most common (and sneakiest) causes of bloat, unwelcome weight fluctuations, poor digestion, and stomach pain. Foods that can cause inflammation in the gut (and on the skin, for that matter) include dairy, alcohol, fried foods, and processed snacks, meats, and gluten.
Limiting these selections in favour of whole, plant-based foods is particularly essential for thyroid health, which plays a big role in controlling your energy and metabolism. According to "thyroid expert" Fern Olivia, founder of Thyroid Yoga, getting your nutrients in at breakfast is critically important (but often overlooked) and the key to a happy thyroid.
"Eating within 90 minutes of waking up kick-starts your thyroid, keeps energy levels up, and tunes up your metabolism," she wrote in a new Mind Body Green report. What you eat for breakfast is just as important as when, and Olivia's anti-inflammation breakfast is the perfect recipe for peak thyroid health. According to Olivia, a high-protein breakfast is optimal for keeping your thyroid in tip-top condition. "You'll want to kiss that oatmeal or toast farewell for a little bit, even if it's gluten-free and packed with superfoods," she said. "For anyone with a thyroid condition or hormone imbalance looking for healthy muscle tone and improved metabolism, I've seen the best results including both animal sources and vegetable sources of protein daily." Healthy fats and antioxidants are also essential. Olivia's go-to breakfast contains all the above.
"Two soft-boiled eggs, half an avocado, smoked wild salmon with greens and dulse."
Olivia's breakfast is a nutrient powerhouse. It contains eggs for iodine and omega-3 fatty acids, which work to keep your hormone levels balanced and enhance mental focus. She calls avocado a "beauty food" for its ability to give you glowing skin, shiny hair, and strong nails. Selenium-rich salmon reduces inflammation and boosts your immune system, and dark leafy greens coupled with fresh raw greens detox your body, boost cognitive function, and encourage digestion.
Start your day with this breakfast of champions—your thyroid will thank you!
