Hailey Baldwin Told Us Her Best Beauty Secrets (and Everything She Eats)

by Lisa Patulny

It's a Monday morning in Sydney, and as I stand amongst dozens of media and influencers sipping coffee inside Rose Bay's picturesque Catalina, Hailey Baldwin takes the stage. In town to rep her first-ever makeup collection with Australian brand ModelCo, the model and budding businesswoman is cool, calm and collected. As she chats through the year-long creative process behind the production of her range beside founder Shelley Sullivan, we get a sneak peek into everything from her feelings about former ambassador Rosie Huntington-Whiteley ("I look up to her"), to her favourite skincare ingredients (see: coconut oil). As I stand there, transfixed, I have to remind myself that Baldwin is only young (she's wise beyond her years). Self-assured, relatable, unflinchingly funny when put on the spot—these are not descriptors I'd use to describe most 21-year-olds I know. Yet Baldwin fits them all.

The next day, we're back to shoot and interview our new favourite beauty ambassador. I've told a handful of girls in the office about my plans to shoot Baldwin lounging on a chair. I figure it's a nice way to communicate the easiness of her personality and capture a little of her outfit (not just her beautifully painted face.) They don't appear to listen to a word I say, instead bombarding me with questions to ask. "Make sure you find out how she makes her cheekbones look so...amazing," says one colleague. "Quiz her on how she got so good at making up her own face," begs another. Armed with way more questions than have been approved by the PR, I start with the basics.

Speaking of the collection, Baldwin says she was most excited to create her own facial oil, owning up to her aforementioned "obsession" with coconut oil. "Coconut Luxe, $25, is 100% natural and I use it all over my body and hair for moisture and a beautiful sheen." Also? She LOVES lip balm. In a world currently fixated with matte liquid lipsticks, it is refreshing to hear Baldwin say how much she loved creating the Kiss Pot Rose Lip Balm ($32). "It's a luxurious rose-scented balm with barely there colour that smooths, hydrates and plumps the lips with moisture." (And yes. It is as good as she makes it sound.)

Considering pals Kendall and Kylie both also have their feet firmly planted in the beauty industry, I venture to ask Baldwin if they ever share tips and product recommendations. "We always talk about work!" she exclaims. "We are all really supportive of each other’s products and give honest feedback on all the stuff we try." (I may or may not lose a few minutes here daydreaming about their beauty chats...) Baldwin pulls me back to reality with mention of her two best makeup tricks. "I like to blend the highlighter on my cheekbones right up to my temples," she explains. "I also use it on my cupid's bow to really enhance my lip gloss." Her luminiser of choice: On-The-Glow ($45) in Spotlight.

Makeup chat over, we're onto diet and exercise. Baldwin says that though she always eats clean ("I grew up that way and feel better when I do"), she cuts out gluten and dairy when she's trying to be super-healthy. Her daily diet is refined but not restrictively so. "Breakfast is usually eggs or some type of healthy protein or a smoothie; lunch is a salad with fish, lots of veggies—I love a good kale Caesar salad but without croutons!; dinner is along the same lines as lunch or maybe a gluten-free pasta," she says. Before you take another sip of your full fat latte and feel sorry for her, don't. "I do [usually] try and limit all sugar but I often have a complete cheat day where I eat whatever I like," she affirms.

Baldwin's wellness motto is similarly realistic: "[Staying in shape is] all about balance. And working out obviously, that is really important to me." Her weekly exercise routine consists of working out with a trainer, and boxing and Pilates. "I still take a dance class when I can," she adds. Forever trying to improve my own gym game, I can't help but ask, what's the best fitness tip she's picked up over the years? Her response proves she doesn't dabble in Hollywood BS: "Honestly you just have to find something you like to do and do it often! Also, just do it even when you don’t want to—that is when you feel the best afterwards." See? Told you she's wise beyond her years. And with that, we're done. Her, with countless shoots and interviews left to navigate before the day is over, and me, en route back to the office to share her beauty secrets.
