4 Makeup Secrets for Looking More Photogenic, According to Amanda Steele
Amanda Steele isn't old enough to vote, but she's got close to 3 million people tuned into her popular beauty and fashion YouTube channel and can boast a product collaboration, CoverGirl contract, and IMG representation on her resume. At just 17, Steele (or MakeupByMandy24 as she's known in the vlogosphere) wants to be recognised as (and has rightfully earned) the title of triple threat: Vlogger, model, and—a more recent career venture—actress.
Take a quick scroll through the teen's Instagram page, and it's abundantly clear she's a pro at finding her light, whether she's being shot with an iPhone or a 35-millimetre camera. Perhaps her seven years of experience in front of a webcam (yes, she started her channel when she was just 10 years old) has prepared her for her model status, or perhaps it's just her inherent talent to pose like a pro. Either way, over the years, Steele has perfected her makeup application to appear 'shopped in real life—precise brows, expertly placed highlight, and the like. Eager to tap her brain for these camera-ready tips, we asked Steele to spill her secrets, and spill she did. Keep reading to learn how to never take a bad picture again.
"Lighting is key for helping your makeup look flawless on Instagram. Take your selfie in front of a window and you will glow," Steele says. In other words, you should be facing the window with the camera in front of you. Otherwise, if the light is behind you and your camera is facing the window, you body will be hidden in a shadow. As for the best angle to shoot at? "If you hold the phone higher, it's usually more flattering! Although, everyone's best angle is different, so try them all out," explains Steele.
In terms of hiding shine before getting in front of the camera, Steele isn't too keen on reaching for the powder (you've seen those chalky and overly concealed paparazzi shots, right?). Instead, Steele suggests losing the powder puff entirely. "If you like to touch up your skin before posting the picture, having a creamy (not powdery) base will make your skin look more seamless." Giorgio Armani's Luminous Silk Foundation ($95) has the perfect finish for hiding imperfections without the shiny aftermath.
Something else Steele swears by is false lashes. It's hard to believe her electric blue eyes need any sort of accent, but the beauty guru swears by a little something extra to make them stand out even more. "Having your eyelashes on point will make your eyes pop in your photos. I like having eyelash extensions, but I will always love adding strip lashes if I want something extra." We recommend makeup artist Helen Dowsley's Naturals Lashes ($12).
Steele has a naturally plump pout, but those who aren't blessed with full lips can try some camera-tricking methods. "I think the most flattering way to make your lips look bigger is to use a light touch. Dabbing your lips with a light colour or gloss a little bit outside your lip shape makes a more natural-looking plump."
Finally, we're fairly certain Steele's perfected her arches in such a way that gives us intense brow envy, but her advice to achieve the look is quite simple. "I think less is more with eyebrows. Follow your natural eyebrow shape and fill in just where there are missing hairs. It is easy to get carried away trying to make them perfect, so just use your natural shape to your advantage!"
