This Ex-Model Has Perfected Low-Key Skincare—This Is Her Routine
Ever wish you could peek into the beauty cabinets of other women? Ask them about each and every product before you gather your notes and make a beeline for the nearest Mecca? We did too, hence our Real Women, Real Routines series that will be running for the next month. We’re shining a spotlight on actual women, and detailing the ins and outs of their personal skincare routines.
We asked all the questions, from their approach to skincare, to issues they’re dealing with, morning and evening beauty rituals, and the products they’ll keep buying forever. In this week’s column, Writer, Influencer, INF / Network member and ex-model Ally May Hayward so kindly walked us through every single step in her expertly curated skincare routine. Being an influencer with almost 100,000 Instagram followers, hundreds of products are at her disposal, so you know that all those who made the cut are seriously good.
Keep reading for all the skincare products she swears by.
Byrdie Australia: What’s your approach to skincare?
Ally May Hayward: My personal approach is minimal, yet effective. I love a minimalist routine, but with maximum results. I always keep it consistent, as I think that is the key to good skin. I also try to keep a consistent diet, because this is just as important—my time as a model has helped me recognise the importance of looking after yourself inside and out. Working with so many great professionals and gaining their advice also helped me a lot. Even though I’ve changed careers, I think my routine has stayed somewhat the same. However, I am more aware of brands, ingredients, and the benefits of products now that I write full-time. I am a big researcher and love to know what I am using and why.
B: How do you go about choosing products?
AMH: I love using ethical brands and I try, where possible, to use products that I know are really good for my skin. I have been dabbling in natural skincare a little bit as well. It’s a slow process to change over though.
B: Do you have any skincare issues you’re currently treating?
AMH: I have been under a lot of stress lately, so I’m breaking out around my chin and lower half of my face. To help this, I’ve started to exercise again after a little hiatus. I’m also making sure I’m eating a healthy diet. I always try lifestyle changes before I go in and change the products I am using, as quite often when our skin is breaking out, it’s just asking us to love it a little more.
B: What do you buy over and over?
AMH: SK-II Facial Treatment Essence ($210). I live for this stuff. SK-II Aura Essence ($310) as it makes your skin glow. Clarins Comfort Lip Oil ($33): This stuff is the business, and it’s perfect for flying. Endota Charcoal Detox Mask ($38) because it’s a purifying godsend, and Jurlique Moisture Replenishing Day Cream ($89)—it’s super light and absorbs quickly.
B: Anything you’d never use on your skin?
AMH: I am very sensitive, so I don’t really like things that aggravate it. Peels don’t really work for me.
B: Walk us through your current morning routine.
AMH: First, I drink The Beauty Chef Collagen Inner Beauty Boost ($40). Then I make my smoothie with Welleco’s The Super Elixir ($85) before drinking a coffee the size of my head. Next, I cleanse at my basin with SK-II Facial Treatment Cleansing Gel ($75) or Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Botanical Cleansing Oil ($48), depending on my skin. I then shower and exfoliate my face with the Grown Alchemist Facial Polishing Exfoliant ($55). It’s organic and I love the fine texture. Next up, I’ll use a small amount of SK-II Facial Treatment Essence ($210) on a cotton pad. I follow this with Jurlique Moisture Replenishing Day Cream ($89) and the Herbal Recovery Eye Cream ($55). If I am particularly dry, I will pat in a facial oil as well, but just in the areas that need it. I use a little Clarins Lip Oil ($33), and then it’s makeup time.
B: Walk us through your current evening routine.
AMH: I take my makeup as soon as I can with makeup wipes. Next, I’ll use the same cleansers as my morning routine. Monday’s are mask day, so every Monday I’ll put one on. After this, I use the SK-II Facial Treatment Essence ($210) again (like I said, I love it). I follow it with Khiel’s Ultra Facial Cream ($71). I use Clarins Lip Oil ($33) again before I have either a green tea or The Beauty Chef Sleep Inner Beauty Powder ($50). It’s so calming before bedtime.
B: Which experts do you look to for your personal skin upkeep?
AMH: Aveda. They’re all natural, which I love. Because I am so sensitive, I like facials that are natural and have no downtime. Aveda’s are the best.
